Brett Mason / Editor
My editing career started in NYC at renowned documentary powerhouse Radical Media under the mentorship of the great Josh Pearson. During my time there (15 years), I had the privilege of working with some of the greats in documentary filmmaking including Morgan Neville, Nathaniel Kahn, Michael John Warren, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. Beyond that I have also been fortunate enough to serve as the editorial hands for some of the industry's most daring directors such as the legendary Terry Gilliam, Robert Altman, Bennett Miller, Danny Clinch and Derek Cianfrance.
What I’ve learned over my many years in the edit seat can’t be contained on a simple web page…but a few key thoughts do come to mind. In documentary work, the story isn't on the page…it's in the subtext, the silences, and the spontaneous connections found in the edit suite. My job is to translate the director's vision into a visceral audience experience and the most powerful special effect I have at my disposal is a perfectly timed human moment. I find and extract the story from within the hundreds of hours of chaos. Every frame must earn its place by either advancing the story or deepening the character. It’s all about the storytelling. Whether you have 2 hrs, 42 mins or 30 secs to tell that story.
The projects I’ve edited have won or been nominated for Emmy, Peabody, NAACP Image, Grammy, IDA, Telly, Webby, Clio, Effie, One Show, Cannes Lion awards. They have been official selections for Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, Telluride, AFI, Hot Docs, Full Frame, Mill Valley, Aspen, Nashville, San Francisco and New York Film Festivals to name a few.
